Before the The Spiral Tunnels were completed in 1908, the ruling grade on the Big Hill was over 4%. This represented a bottleneck for train traffic in both directions and a source of many accidents. Swiss designed, the Yoho tunnels bore into the mountains with 1100' diameter spiral loops to lenghten the track and reduce the grade. Still the ruling grade eastbound for eastbound trains, the tunnels have greatly improved traffic on this busy mainline.
