Nevada Northern Railway Born during the booming copper mining era in the early 1900s, this railroad was made to link the mines and smelter in Ely, Nevada to the Union Pacific mainline 140 miles to the north. Gradually, the rail traffic declined and service was stopped in 1983. That same year, the White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation was started and three years later, 32 miles of track, service buildings and equipment were in tourist operation. One can even learn to operate a locomotive on the NNR.
