Here are scenes from the October, 2006 Mainline Steam excursion from Christchurch to Greymouth on the South Island. This route has been rated as one of the world's most scenic railway journeys covering 224 kms with16 tunnels, 5 viaducts up to 73m high and crossing the Southern Alps at Arthur's Pass. Power was provided by J1236 built in 1939 by North British Locomotive Works in Scotland and now owned by Ian Welch's Mainline Steam Inc. On the North Island just outside Wellington, we found another of Ian's locomotives, the streamlined J1211. Included are a few scenes from the Kingston Flyer south of Queenstown and a short trip on a DC diesel out of Wellington. Track is 3'6" guage.
